Certain garbage should not be dealt with by your normal trash service. In addition to posing a risk to the person handling your trash or dumpster, some materials may leach into and poison the groundwater. It’s crucial to learn which items require special treatment so you don’t cause undue harm. To help you stay informed, here are five materials to think twice about before throwing out.

What to Keep Out of a Normal Dumpster

1. Old Electronics

With new devices entering the market constantly, people are often tempted to throw out their old ones. Computers and electronics contain heavy metals, which can harm the environment and should only be disposed of at a recycling center. Or, if they’re still functional, consider selling or donating them.

2. Motor Oil

There are numerous reasons you shouldn’t throw out motor oil or dump it down the drain. Like other oils, it could clog a plumbing system. In addition to contaminating the environment and destroying wildlife, motor oil may also render wastewater treatment less effective. Dispose of motor oil by encasing it in an airtight plastic carton and bringing it to a recycling center.

3. Oil-Based Paint

dumpsterDo you have extra paint from an old project lying around? Don’t throw it into the dumpster or pour it down the drain — even if it’s only a small amount. Like other oily products, oil-based paint has a destructive effect on the environment. Some types of paint, such as latex, however, can be safely thrown out provided they have completely dried out first.

4. Fluorescent Light Bulbs & Thermometers

These two products can both contaminate the environment with mercury. This substance is toxic to people, and it’s often transmitted through the consumption of fish. If you suspect you’ve been exposed to mercury and experience unexplained trembling or numbness, see your doctor immediately.
