When a member of your church congregation loses a loved one, you may be at a loss for how to help them. But it is a church's responsibility to comfort and care for those who are grieving. There are numerous ways to do this, and below, the ministerial staff at Knox Presbyterian Church in Cincinnati, OH, shares some practical tips.

How Church Helps People Grieving a Loss

1. Be There

Everyone deals with grief differently, and in the process, they may need different things. There's no cookie-cutter response when you're trying to comfort someone who has lost a loved one, but even if you have no idea what to say, your presence can be helpful. Make it clear that you're available if they want to talk.

2. Offer Spiritual Encouragement

Death bridges the gap between this world and the next and often leaves those who are grieving asking questions about their or their lost loved one’s spiritual state. Be prepared to offer biblical encouragement. Both prayer and reading from the Word can be particularly comforting to those who are grieving.

3. Provide Practical Care

A lot of people will ask those who are grieving what they can do to help, but that question may seem too broad. Ask specific questions about what the person needs right now, and take the time to notice what chores you and other members of the congregation can help with. Picking up kids from school, doing their laundry, or even dropping a note in the mail can send the message that the church cares and wants to help.

Church4. Remove the Burden

Do your best not to add to the burden of those who are grieving. If you provide them with a meal, serving it in a disposable container so they don't have to worry about clean up can be a blessing. Or if you need help with an upcoming event, consider asking someone else for assistance. Give your friend time and space to process their grief.

5. Check in Periodically

Check in with them every now and then to let them know you’re praying for them and understand that they’re grieving. Having a support system both from fellow church members and God can help people tremendously while they’re in mourning.

The community at Knox Presbyterian Church strives to support members through both the happy and challenging moments of life. They offer a number of learning, fellowship, and serving opportunities and would love to have you join them for Sunday morning worship.
