Residential moving can quickly become overwhelming with all the steps it requires. To ensure you don’t forget anything and maybe even relieve some of your stress, start a moving checklist one or two months in advance. If you’re unsure where to start, below are some important items to include.

What to Put on a Residential Moving Checklist

1. Get Rid of Clutter

Consider having a yard sale or donating old items. However you decide to go about it, aim to get rid of unwanted belongings as soon as possible prior to your move. This will make it a lot easier to go through with it, not least because your movers will have less to carry.

2. Make “Survival” Kits

If your move is extensive, make sure each family member has a bag with a change of clothes, cash, toothbrush, snacks, and other essential items. That way, they’ll always have what they need, even when everything is packed. This is an especially important task for long-distance moves.

3. Plan for Child or Pet Care

To make it easier for everyone involved, consider letting your kids stay with relatives for a few days while you work with a professional service to complete the most labor-intensive parts of the move. Pets should also be accommodated for, as residential moving can be an overwhelming experience for them.

4. Transfer Your Services

This can be broken down into many sub-items. For example, you’ll need to forward your mail, transfer cable and internet services, and change your billing address for any credit accounts. Ideally, start transferring your services two weeks in advance.

5. Arrange for Cleaning Services

Will your new home require special cleaning before you move in? Or does your old landlord need you to clean out your old home? Make these arrangements well in advance, bearing in mind that some services may take more than a day. For example, carpets may need up to 48 hours to dry after cleaning.
