Orthopedic Surgery Guide

Before

Regardless of the type of surgery you are having, the doctor will ask you to follow a few basic pre-operative instructions. They will instruct you to have blood work done prior to the procedure to ensure you are in good health. They may also advise you to stop smoking and refrain from taking certain medications, including aspirin or anti-inflammatory prescriptions.

You will not eat or drink anything except water after midnight on the evening before the operation. Follow the doctor’s guidelines for medicine you should keep taking. The surgery center will tell you what time you need to arrive for preparation; this is usually about two hours beforehand. Wear comfortable clothing, bring your insurance card, and ask a friend or family member to come so they can drive you home. If you have specific questions, consult with the surgeon.

During

OrthopedicAfter arriving at the scheduled time and filling out paperwork, you will change into a hospital gown. Leave jewelry and valuable items at home. Once you are ready, you will be escorted to an operating suite. Your friends and family will wait in the reception area. An anesthesiologist will prepare you for surgery and ensure you are comfortable.

After

Once your orthopedic surgeon completes the treatment, you will be transported to the hospital’s post-operative recovery unit. After you wake up, a team of nurses will ensure you are feeling well and ready to be discharged. Some patients stay in post-anesthesia care for a couple of hours, while others with more complex surgical needs may remain for monitoring overnight.
