If you’re a Medicare patient, you have access to a free exam at your doctor’s office called an annual wellness visit. Yes, it’s actually free, and it’s a benefit you should take advantage of every year to maintain good health. Here’s what you need to know about this process.

What Is an Annual Wellness Visit?

An annual wellness visit is a preventative care measure that can help you stay healthy throughout the year and prevent long-term problems that you may be at-risk for. Your doctor will take the time to talk with you about any current healthcare issues you’re facing and ones that could arise in the future based on your history, lifestyle, age, and other factors.

Bring a list of your current prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, and supplements you take, along with a list of your medical care providers. You’ll probably also need to present your Medicare card and ID when you arrive at the doctor’s office. The physician will ask for your personal and family medical history. If that information is hard to remember, write it down in advance. You will have opportunities to ask questions about your symptoms and the things you need to do to stay healthy. Some people find it helpful to write down their questions before the appointment.

Your Annual Wellness Exam is the gift of good health you can give yourself this year. If it’s been 12 months since your last exam, call your doctor’s office to schedule one right away.
