Upgrading to new energy-efficient replacement windows will lower your energy bills and prolong the lifetime of your furnace and air conditioning systems, by allowing them to cycle less often, and for shorter periods of time.  There are a lot of factors that go into constructing an energy-efficient window.  But why do windows use argon gas?

In double and triple pane windows, argon gas is most often used as the gas between the panes.  One reason is that it is colorless, odorless, and safe—it is non-poisonous, and is non-flammable.

The other reason it is used is because it makes the windows more energy-efficient.  Argon gas is denser than normal atmospheric air, and therefore provides better insulating properties.
