4 Kinds of Sedation Dentistry & What to Expect, Ash Flat, Arkansas

Dental related anxiety is an incredibly common problem, even for adults. Fortunately, through the science of sedation dentistry, you can lay back and relax while your dentist focuses on your oral health. Here are four kinds of sedation dentistry and what to expect.

The Common Types of Sedation Dentistry

1. Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide, also called laughing gas, is inhaled through a small nose or face mask to provide a light level of sedation. After the gas is inhaled, the molecules can pass through the blood-brain barrier, interfering with the neural receptors that process pain. The effects of laughing gas wear off within a few minutes of stopping inhalation, allowing you to continue on with your normal day without issue.

2. Oral Sedation

Sometimes, patients require additional sedation to remain calm while in the dental chair. If you need something else to help you relax, your dentist might prescribe medication before your treatment. Prescribed pills are usually taken about 30 minutes before the procedure starts and can help patients to relax or even sleep during the procedure.

3. IV Sedation

sedation dentistryFor an even deeper level of sedation that is still controllable, some dentists prescribe IV sedation. During IV sedation, you are given a sedative drip during the procedure. If you require more sedation, the drip is increased, and if you are too sleepy during the procedure, your dentist can reduce the amount of medicine you are receiving.

4. General Anesthesia

Some dental procedures are so in-depth that dentists prefer patients to be completely unconscious. For example, if you are receiving a full mouth of dental implants, it might be easiest to go to sleep in the operating room and then wake up in recovery after the procedure is over. General anesthesia requires patients to check into the hospital, change into a gown, receive an IV, breathe from a face mask, and become intubated during the procedure.
