All You Need to Know about Allergies from CityMD’s Urgent Care Clinic, Manhattan, New York

At CityMD, our highly trained physicians and nurses are here to help patients with a wide array of illnesses and injuries. Every year as winter winds down and turns into spring, we notice more and more people coming in complaining about their allergies and looking for relief. If you’ve ever wondered what causes those unpleasant allergy symptoms and what you can do to treat them, read on to learn more!

What happens when you have an allergy?

When you have an allergy, your immune system treats a particular substance in your body as a threat, and releases histamines to combat it. It’s not yet known why this mistaken response occurs, but when your body does flood your system with these histamines, it can actually lead to fatalities, known as anaphylaxis, especially in cases where your throat begins to close up and your breathing becomes increasingly difficult.

What causes an allergic reaction?

Typical triggers of an allergic reaction include certain types of food, medicines, insect venom, rubber materials, pet dander, cosmetics, and pollen, just to name a few.

What are the symptoms of an allergic reaction?

Red, itchy hives, nasal congestion, rashes, watery eyes, heart palpitations, tongue and eye swelling, difficulty breathing, dizziness, the sensation of having a lump in the throat, facial flushing, anxiety, cramping, chest pain, and loss of consciousness.

What are the treatment options for an allergic reaction?

For minor allergies, an antihistamine such as Benadryl can be extremely effective in stopping the reaction in its tracks, before it has a chance to worsen. But since Benadryl contains diphenhydramine, it can make you feel drowsy to the point of finding it hard to concentrate and go about your day. If you are experiencing allergy symptoms in the daylight hours, you can try a product like Claritin, for full day relief without that groggy feeling.

For severe allergic reactions like anaphylaxis, an EpiPen is used to shoot epinephrine, also known as adrenaline, into the body, by way of the upper thigh, and open the airways so normal breathing can resume. In these severe cases, a trip to the emergency room is necessary, even after EpiPen administration.

If you or someone you know is suffering from allergies and looking for some relief, we would love to help. For general inquiries, contact us here and one of our staff members will reach out to answer all your questions and help you find a solution to your unpleasant symptoms.
