One of the most common dermatology concerns for adults and children alike are warts. These fleshy bumps are the result of the human papillomavirus and can be spread through skin-to-skin contact. Although rarely dangerous, warts can be uncomfortable, unsightly, and contagious. Fortunately, there are a number of remedies for eliminating these growths, both at home and at your local medical clinic. To learn more about some of the different wart-removing treatments available, continue reading below.

Dermatology Tips: 5 Ways to Eliminate Warts

1. Salicylic Acid

Salicylic acid is an excellent at-home remedy for removing warts. Sold over-the-counter in pharmacies and drug stores, this acid is applied directly to the wart using a brush. With routine application one to two times a day, the wart should disappear within just a few weeks.

2. Taping

Another popular at-home method for removal is duct tape. For this method, a small strip of duct tape is placed securely over the wart and left there for two to three days. When the tape is removed, it will peel the top layers of the wart away with it. After allowing the area to breathe for a full day, the tape can be applied again until the wart is eliminated.

3. Freezing

If the wart is resistant to at-home remedies, have your primary care physician refer you to a dermatology provider. A dermatologist will most likely begin your wart removal treatment by applying liquid nitrogen to the area. The nitrogen will essentially freeze the wart, allowing it to fall off by itself.

4. Laser Dermatology

A dermatologist may also choose to eliminate the wart using laser dermatology. With this method, an intense laser is applied directly to the surface of the wart. The heat from the laser works to burn the growth off of the skin while also minimizing the risk of scarring.

5. Surgery

Surgery is also an option for eliminating stubborn warts. This minor surgery—done with a local or topical anesthetic—cuts the wart off of the surface of the skin. While this method works to remove the growth, it can cause scarring and should only be used as a final option.
