All pet owners should consider spaying or neutering their animals. The procedure prevents them from becoming pregnant or impregnating other animals, helping control the population and limit homelessness. Fixing your pets may also make them less aggressive toward other household animals and adopt a calmer demeanor. Below, O’Fallon Veterinary Medical Center in Missouri shares some information on the best time for spaying or neutering cats and dogs.

The Best Time for Spaying or Neutering Cats

spayingVeterinarians typically recommend spaying or neutering cats between four and six months of age. Before six months of age there is no chance your pet will get pregnant. Also, your vet will assess your animal's health, breed, and age before deciding the best time for the procedure.

When to Spay or Neuter Dogs

A common myth is that you should wait until a dog has her first heat cycle before spaying her. In fact, doing so can actually be more dangerous for animals that are not going to breed because it increases the chances that they’ll develop malignant mammary neoplasia, a form of breast cancer. Because of this reason, we recommend that you spay your animal earlier — between four and nine months.  If your dog has had puppies before or is currently feeding a litter, you’ll need to consult with your veterinarian to learn the best time to spay her.

At this time, there is a significant amount of research being conducted to determine the frequency of orthopedic disease and cancers in intact vs. spayed and neutered dogs.  Your veterinarian will go over these issues, including all the pros and cons of spaying/neutering, when you come in for puppy visits.

It’s important to note that animals who are older can also be fixed, as long as they are in good health. A vet will help you decide if you should do this procedure and when the best time would be.
