Getting braces can be exciting—it means you’re well on your way to a straighter, healthier, more beautiful smile. Before the dentist installs them, however, you may feel a little nervous. To get comfortable before the big day, use the following guide to learn what you can expect and how to prepare.

How to Brace Yourself for Getting Braces

Weeks Before the Appointment

Schedule a dental appointment and teeth cleaning a few weeks before your visit so the surface beneath your braces will be squeaky clean and ready for application. During your appointment, don’t be afraid to ask your dentist questions about the big day and the months thereafter. Many people have specific concerns about food, for instance. You can prepare to say temporarily say goodbye to hard candies, popcorn, and other sticky, chewy foods that can damage your braces. Enjoy these foods now so they’re eliminated from your pantry in advance.

Day of the Appointment

bracesBefore your appointment, thoroughly brush and floss your teeth. About an hour before, you may take one dose of a mild pain reliever such as ibuprofen. While the application will not cause pain, a painkiller will reduce any mild discomfort you may experience following the procedure.

The Procedure

When you arrive at your appointment, the dentist will clean and dry your teeth. Then, they will apply a bonding glue to adhere the brackets. After placing the brackets, the dentist will feed wires through each one. Choose colored bands to make your smile stand out, or clear ones for a more discreet look. The choice is yours!
