If you listen to anyone who completed the Honolulu Marathon, they’ll tell you that everything hurts after running 26.2 miles. From sore backs to fatigued hamstrings, nearly every runner who crosses the finish line of this prestigious race has a muscle ache that needs attention. With this in mind, students at the Hawaii Massage Academy in Honolulu, HI, one of Hawaii’s leading massage training schools, volunteered to offer relief to weary marathon participants on December 10, 2017.

How Students at Hawaii’s Top Massage Training School Helped Runners Recover

This was the second year in a row where students from the academy volunteered their services at the Honolulu Marathon. The Honolulu Marathon, which is the fourth-largest marathon in the U.S., offered students the opportunity to get valuable experience helping runners recover, all while enjoying the festive post-race atmosphere.

The massage therapists’ treatments were focused on several key areas of recovery:

  • Reducing Muscle Pain and Fatigue: After a marathon, toxic lactic acid builds up in the body. Massage therapy improves circulation and blood flow to eliminate this source of pain and fatigue.
  • massage-trainingIncreasing Flexibility: Strained muscles don’t have the same elasticity as fully recovered ones. Massage therapists worked to relieve muscles and restore alignment to allow for a greater range of motion.
  • Promoting Relaxation: After a marathon, the body is exhausted. Massaging the tired, achy muscles of the runners allowed the participants to relax and recover after a long day.

Whether it is after a big race or for everyday aches and pains, the Hawaii Massage Academy is dedicated to helping their students learn the art of massage. Since 1983, the Hawaii Massage Academy has helped over 4,000 graduates achieve their goal of becoming a professional massage therapist.
