Are you ready for spring?  The spring planting season is just around the corner, and it is a good time to start planning for outdoor projects.  The experts at Glynn Young’s Landscaping & Nursery Center in Nicholasville, KY, share 6 points to consider when planning and planting a new landscape.

6 Most Important Points for Planning and Installing Your New Landscaping

  1.  Have a Plan  –  Approaching your new landscape without a plan can lead to future frustrations.  Plan ahead and sketch out your ideas.  If you visit the garden center with thoughts and ideas in hand, the staff can offer more personalized suggestions.
  2. Pick Your Plants – Make a list of plants and trees that you like.  Research the size, sun exposure, characteristics and specific requirements for your plant choices.
  3. Consult With Your Local Garden Center or Nursery - Get advice from those who know and love plants.  Knowledge from experienced plantsmen will go a long way toward your long term success.
  4. Distance – When planting your new plants, remember that plants grow!  Consider the size and growth rate of the plant, and leave enough space for them based on this information.  Do not plant too close to the house, or too close to other plants, as they will crowd each other out quickly, which can have a negative effect on the plant’s health.  We generally suggest planting foundation plantings at least 24 inches from the house, possibly more based on plant selection.
  5. Plant It Right the First Time – Many do-it-yourselfers plant their plants too deep.  With soil conditions in the Central Kentucky area, plant medium to large trees and shrubs approximately 2 inches above existing grade, sloping the covering topsoil up to root ball level.  Be sure to mulch with 2 – 3 inches of organic mulch after planting.
  6. Watering – Plants need moisture to survive, particularly when newly planted.  When planting during the growing season, usually watering 3 days in a row, and then 1 to 2 times a week after that, will do the job.  However, rain, heat, plant variety and wind all have an effect in watering requirements.  If in doubt, call the nursery where you purchased your plants to get the most current watering information.
