Veterinarians Discuss How to Use Positive Reinforcement While Behavior Training Your Pet, Ewa, Hawaii

After bringing home a new puppy or kitten, it is essential to work quickly and begin behavior training. When an animal is properly trained from a young age, it reduces its stress and encourages positive pet health. Most veterinarians, including the expert staff at Waipahu Waikele Pet Hospital in Hawaii, agree the best way to shape a pet's behavior is with positive reinforcement.

Since training an animal can be nerve racking, it is tempting for an owner to use punishment. However, this is the incorrect way to modify an animal's behavior. Down the road, it often leads to aggression, which makes pet grooming and other common activities difficult. Also, this may scare your animal. If you hit or yell at your pet, you may find he will avoid your presence.

Positive reinforcement is an important part of pet care. You should actively watch for good behavior and offer rewards for positive actions. This type of reinforcement helps socialize your animal so that he is relaxed and comfortable among people. For example, do not tease your dog or play games that encourage biting. Also, offer a treat or a toy for calm behavior when someone new visits your home. For cat owners, give him a treat when he uses the litter box or scratching post as well. And just like with dogs, don't yell or hit your cat if he sprays or scratches furniture.

Since 1972, Waipahu Waikele Pet Hospital has provided top pet services to the area. This facility specializes in pet medicine, surgery, and other animal needs. The staff is willing to offer advice about any animal topic, including behavior training. If you have any questions about training or need to schedule a visit, call (808) 671-7387.
