When you’re out at a local happy hour or enjoying a weekend cocktail, you might consider something made with scotch or bourbon. And while these liquors might seem fairly similar, the reality is, there are actually some key differences between the two. To ensure you select the perfect spirit at your next happy hour, consider the interesting facts below.

3 Key Differences Between Scotch & Bourbon

1. Ingredients

The most tangible differences between scotch and bourbon have to do with the ingredients. Scotch is made mostly from malted barley, yeast, and water. Bourbon, on the other hand, is primarily comprised of corn. In fact, there are strict laws regarding how much of this ingredient is needed to technically qualify this spirit as a bourbon. In the U.S., 51% of the drink must be made of corn.

2. Geography

happy hourThe difference between the two also has to do with where they come from. For a whisky to truly be considered a scotch, it needs to have matured in Scotland for at least three years. Bourbon, on the other hand, must be made in the U.S. to legally qualify as this type of spirit. This liquor is primarily made in Kentucky, although they can be made elsewhere.

3. Taste

Although the two spirits do taste very similar, there are some unique attributes that distinguish one from the other. For example, scotch has a smoky, peaty taste that comes from the malting process. Conversely, if you prefer a slightly sweeter flavor at happy hour, bourbon is a better choice. This liquor sometimes has a hint of vanilla, which is due to the container it’s kept in while it ages.
