Dogs are curious and playful creatures. Their natural inclinations are to dig and sniff out anything new, exciting, or even potentially dangerous. Unfortunately, if your dog has a tendency to dig under your fencing, it could lead to your pooch getting loose or to costly fence repairs. AAA Fence is the Anchorage area’s leading source of fencing solutions; they offer full service repairs as well as new chain link fences, electric fences, and wrought iron fencing installation.

One of the most common reasons dogs dig beneath fences is for the simple fact that they are bored. Dogs require stimulation to keep their minds and bodies active. If your dog is left alone in the yard, make sure he has enough entertainment to keep him occupied. This means stocking the yard with his favorite toys and food and water. Also be sure to walk your dog at least twice daily as this will help burn off excess energy and make it more likely that, when left in a bright backyard, he will just relax in the sun.

Your dog might be looking for other critters in the yard—critters his instincts tell him are prey. This will cause him to dig, root, and scratch around fencing to seek out these prey. Do a thorough check of your property for any small, burrowing animals, and if you find any (or indication of any), use a nontoxic solution to get rid of them.

It could also be that your dog is just looking for attention, comfort, or security. If this is the case, slowly introduce him to the fenced-in space at longer and longer intervals, gradually acclimating him to being on his own outside. Praise your dog’s good behavior, play games with him, and give him plenty of affection. Always be mindful of temperature extremes and any potentially unsafe conditions in your yard, and bring your dog inside accordingly. Never leave your dog in the yard alone for exorbitant periods of time or in very hot or very cold weather.
