Your hard-working lawn mower plays an integral property maintenance role, so give it the attention it deserves before storing the machinery for the winter. Performing a few simple tasks prevents many problems that contribute to the premature demise of this important piece of power equipment and its expensive replacement. Here’s how to winterize your lawn mower so it is ready to go in the spring.

How to Prepare Your Lawn Mower for the Cold

1. Stabilize the Fuel

Add fuel stabilizer your lawn mower’s gasoline supply to avoid erosion, rust, engine damage, and a clogged carburetor. Old fuel left to sit in your lawn mower all winter causes the alcohol content to separate and breaks down the system’s plastic and rubber parts. The other chemicals in gasoline also degrade and cause damage.

2. Remove the Battery

3. Change the Oil & Filter

Change the oil and oil filter in your lawn mower, preferably when the engine is warm for increased lubrication. Fill the oil reservoir to its suggested limit so your engine does not rust during the winter. Old oil will clog the engine and increase its corrosion chances.

4. Clean It Thoroughly

Clean the entire lawn mower thoroughly before storing it, including the battery terminal and undercarriage. Take out the spark plugs before removing all grass blades, dirt, and other grime from the mower deck to prevent rust problems, and give the equipment a good spray with your garden hose to remove any leftover debris. Make certain the mower is completely dry before storing it.

You may also want to sharpen the mower blades prior to winter storage. If not, remember to do so before using your lawn mower in the spring because dull blades harm grass.
