How did you hear about CrossFit and what was your first experience?

Kevin Recchi showed me the wonderful world of CrossFit. I owe a lot to him because he has changed my life. Because of him, I eat healthier, feel better about myself, I have more grit and a healthier mindset. My first experience was in January 2016 at a morning workout coached by Lillie Pallo. We did pull ups, and I was like, “why is this kip-thing so difficult?” It left me frustrated, but also a desire to come back for more. Two years ago I couldn’t kip, but now pullups have become a strength and a favorite.

When did you first come to Bombers CrossFit?

After my first three free classes, I waited a two weeks before signing up which was one of the better decisions of my life.

How many days do you CrossFit?

All the days. A perfect week is 6 days, 11 workouts-6 WODs and 5 barbell sessions, depending on how my body feels.

What classes do you normally attend?

For my first year I was a 430 kid. However, lifting with Cassie in the mornings has been awesome, so I’ve been sticking around for the 6 AM class. I like to float around different classes to get different point of views from different coaches.

What motivates you/keeps you coming back to Bombers CrossFit?

The people and the process. I also get joy from helping others with skills or technique and seeing them have success. This all stems from the welcoming gym Andy and Mandy have built that improves people’s lives. I believe they are doing a fabulous job.

There is something about the process and the grind that keeps me coming back. I love to constantly learn new things ask others how they feel after WODs. I like being sore at work. I like doing another set of pulls after my hands have ripping, and I like feeling completely lifeless after a fran. Also it’s the only place I can wear tights in public.

What’s your favorite thing about the Dayton area?

I grew up here and have hundreds of family members I see regularly which is important to me. Also I like going to Glenn Helen, Hinders (wing place in Tipp City), Marion’s Pizza and most importantly I met my soul mate here, Ashleigh Guinn.

What accomplishment are you the proudest of (inside and outside of the gym)?

Movement. The best PR is not a number, it’s moving better. Movement is everything! If you move better, you will lift more and feel better. So I am very proud of how I have focused on moving better.

I’m very proud of my girlfriend Ashleigh, who works more than twice as many hours as I do, but still wants to get out and play and make time for the gym. I’m also very proud of my Father. He has shaped my life and is always excited to hear about my new hobbies and adventures, including CrossFit, while encouraging me to do whatever I’m doing better.

After a hard workout, what is your favorite meal?

I love busting down on some asparagus cooked in bacon grease and strip steak made on my grill, with chocolate milk in a Stella Artois glass (check my Instagram @jamesgotgames). If you are ever hungry, I’m always down to cook for visitors. Also, Kevin makes this marinated Salmon that I have yet to replicate.

What are some of your interests outside of CrossFit?

I love listening to podcasts. Some of my favorites include Hardcore History, Freakenomics, Planet Money, Brute Strength, Chasing Excellence, Serial, and Tell Me Something I Don’t Know. I have two energetic pitbulls that will cuddle and lick your face off. I love taking them to Glenn Helen and Hocking Hills with Ashleigh. I also golf, play softball, recently retired from semi-pro football, used to coach jr high football, and I love skiing.

What is one goal within the gym that you’re working on?

I have been hammering down on jerks. They have been a weakness for some time but they are catching up to my squat clean. I have also spent a lot of time kipping on a bar, the basis for all gymnastics and can’t be understated! This has by far been my greatest improvement.

What impact has CrossFit had on your life/lifestyle/level of fitness?

Everything is better. I eat better, I drink alcohol way less, I am better at my extracurricular sports, and I have made some great friends.

What advice would you give to a newbie?

The CrossFit community doesn’t care if you are an elite athlete or a beginner. The only thing we care about is if you give 100% which is a decision, not based on talent. Also, Hookgrip or die.

Do you have any closing thoughts?

I want specially thank Greg Kerschbaum. I owe most of everything I have accomplished to his technical knowledge. It’s really great that our head coach is dedicated to better himself. First just a coach, and now a friend.
