Teaching your children good oral care habits at home is key to ensuring they maintain a healthy smile throughout their life. But, many parents aren’t sure where to get started and look to their pediatric dentist for advice. Dr. Dean T. Sueda, DDS, MS, has been voted the best pediatric dentist in Hawaii since 2009. Below, he shares his best tips.

Pediatric Dentist’s Tips for Oral Care Habits

1. Brush Your Teeth Together

From the time they’re young, it can be fun for kids to bond with their parents over teeth brushing. Have them pick out their toothbrush and toothpaste so it’s a pleasant experience and encourage them to get into the routine of brushing thoroughly for two minutes before bed each night.

2. Have Them Watch Your Routine

Even if it means brushing and getting ready for bed earlier than usual, showing them the routine you follow will introduce them to tasks they must do as they get older.

3. Practice Swishing Mouthwash

Swishing and spitting out mouthwash can become a fun game for little ones so don’t be afraid to turn it into an exciting event each night. Age-appropriate mouthwash can eliminate excess plaque and any tartar buildup in the mouth.

4. Limit Junk Foods or Sugar

Sugary foods can be detrimental to the teeth even from a young age as they break down the enamel, resulting in cavities. Limit your little one’s junk food intake from a young age and inform them of the effects sugar can have on their smile.
