Garden of Eden Taking a Stand Against Animal Cruelty, Manhattan, New York

At Garden of Eden, we are all about enjoying one of life’s greatest pleasures: delicious, high quality food of all kinds. But in our quest to try new things and enjoy the most decadent and exquisite dishes, we are barring one particular item from our shops: foi gras. This luxurious delicacy is made from the liver of either a duck or goose that has been specifically fattened up for the chief purpose of creating this spread. Unfortunately, the methods used to make these birds plumper goes against our basic principles and we had no choice but to take a stand.

Foi gras production has been controversial for a long time due to the force-feeding procedure used to create this liver dish. Ducks are forced to eat corn through a feeding tube twice daily for nearly two weeks straight and geese are made to do the same thing, three times a day for almost three weeks. These creatures are forced to have a pipe pushed down their throats just so they can eat way more than they need to so their livers can grow at an unnaturally fast rate. Once they are fattened up enough, they are slaughtered and used to create this luxurious dish.

After learning more about the cruel and inhumane treatment of animals that goes into creating foi gras, we simply couldn’t support it anymore. We are proud to do our part and stop selling this product in our supermarket. We hope that with enough awareness, duck and geese feeders will find new ways to create this food without having to harm these animals in the process.
