How to Care for Your New Smile Once the Braces Are Removed, Potomac, Maryland

Getting adult braces removed may feel like the end of a long journey, but in reality, it’s only the beginning. To maintain the beautiful new smile, you need to practice good oral hygiene habits from day one. Fortunately, caring for smooth pearly whites is a lot easier than keeping brackets and wires clean, so you are more than likely up to the task.

How to Care for Teeth After Getting Adult Braces Removed

Keeping Them Straight

It’s natural for teeth to shift over time. In fact, this may have been one of the reasons you needed adult braces. To maintain a straight smile after getting them removed, it’s essential to follow all of the instructions from your orthodontist. This might include wearing a retainer at night or returning to the office after a certain amount of time has passed for follow-up care.

If you received a permanent retainer instead of a removable one, you should follow all the aftercare instructions for keeping it clean. Most fixed retainers must be worn for at least two years, so you can expect to continue seeing the orthodontist for at least that long if you have a permanent orthodontic device now.

Keeping Them Clean & Whiteadult braces

Flossing will be a breeze after getting the braces off, so there is no excuse not to do it every single day. You should also brush at least twice a day and visit a dentist every six months.

Additionally, some people are susceptible to discoloration and staining following braces. For example, if demineralization occurs, small white spots can appear on the teeth. If you want to brighten your smile or remove any white spots, your dentist may recommend professional teeth whitening or re-mineralization. Either one can be an effective approach for improving newly straightened teeth even more.
