The driving instructors from Sure-Drive Driver’s Training in Ft Mitchell, KY know that watching your son or daughter learn to drive can be both exciting and nerve-wracking. Getting a driver’s license is certainly a huge rite of passage, and a big step towards independence and adulthood. Unfortunately, young drivers are also at a higher risk for automobile collisions, driving violations, and other potentially dangerous behavior behind the wheel.

Share these driving safety tips with the teen drivers in your life, and help them become responsible and safe drivers:

  • Avoid distraction: Distraction is a major contributing factor to teen driving accidents. In fact, according to research reported by AAA, having even one teen passenger in a car with a teen driver (even a sibling) increases the teen driver’s crash risk by 44%. The same is true of texting and driving, talking, and even listening to music. The fact is that teen drivers haven’t been driving for very long, so they’re not experienced enough to multitask safely.
  • Keep your distance: Many teen driving accidents occur due to an inability to accurately judge distance and stopping time. Teen drivers tend to overestimate their driving ability, and underestimate the amount of time it will take for their vehicle to come to a complete stop. Teens should play it on the safe side, and make sure they maintain adequate distance from other cars in case an emergency stop is necessary.
  • Don’t make assumptions: Many accidents are the result of teen drivers making assumptions about other drivers, or being overly trustful. For example, a teen driver might see a car with the turn signal on ahead of them, and not slow down as they approach because they trust that the driver will turn. Unfortunately, sometimes turn signals are on accidentally, and if the driver in question doesn’t turn, then the teen driver will collide with them at top speed. Teaching young drivers to read traffic and be cautious is vital.

Of course, one of the best ways to encourage a safe teen driver is to lead by example. By setting a good example, and reminding your teen of these driving safety tips, you’re doing all that you can to promote safety and responsibility!
