As you may already know, visiting your doctor at least once a year helps improve your health and longevity. These routine checkups allow your healthcare professional to assess your vitals, check your weight and blood sugar, and make lifestyle recommendations to improve your overall health. However, even with the best preventative care, you may still experience medical emergencies. Medical emergencies are illnesses and injuries that require immediate attention to prevent a more serious issue. Unfortunately, many patients are uncertain of when to visit the emergency room and often wait until it is too late. To know when it is time to visit your emergency room for immediate care, continue reading below.

How You Know It’s Time to Go to the Emergency Room

1. High-Grade Fever

A fever alone is not a sign you need to visit the emergency room. You may experience a low-grade fever during a cold, after a procedure, or in response to certain medications. However, if you are experiencing a fever of 102° Fahrenheit or higher that persists for more than two days, head to your local hospital as this is a sign of a serious infection.

2. Anaphylaxis

Anaphylaxis is a severe, life-threatening allergic reaction that can occur in adults and children alike. Patients in anaphylactic shock may experience facial swelling, break out in hives, or have difficulty breathing. Anaphylaxis is life-threatening, so seeking immediate medical care is absolutely necessary.

3. Excessive Vomiting

Vomiting at least 10 times in 24 hours, or proceeding to vomit every time you ingest food or beverages is a serious cause for concern. These symptoms are usually a sign of stomach flu or food poisoning, although they can also be indicative of gallbladder stones, diabetes, or pregnancy. Visiting the ER will allow a team of doctors to conclusively diagnose your condition, and minimize your risk of dehydration.
