Healthy batteries keep your vehicle running reliably. With the right car parts, tools, and knowledge, changing your vehicle’s battery is a quick and easy process. Once you have picked up your replacement battery at Trester Used Auto Parts in Milford, OH, follow their steps below to safely and properly replace your current battery.

How to Replace Car Parts: The Battery

1. Remove the Old Battery

Find your current battery—if you don’t know where it is, check your owner’s manual for the location—and identify the positive and the negative terminals. The positive post has a red cover or cable and usually displays a “+” symbol, while the negative is black with a “-” symbol. Begin with the negative terminal by using a wrench to loosen the nut or bolt attaching the cable and terminal to the post. Use a terminal puller to remove the terminal and the cable, then repeat the process with the positive terminal. Remove the clamp holding the battery in place, making sure you keep all the small parts on hand. Carefully lift the battery out.

2. Install the New Battery

Align the battery so that the positive post in the engine aligns with the positive terminal and cable on the battery. Place the battery and secure it with the clamp, putting all the small parts back where they belong. Remove the plastic caps on the battery post and place the anti-corrosion washers over them. Apply anti-corrosion grease to the positive post, then use a wrench to tighten the connector. Do the same for the negative terminal. Wiggle the battery to check if the clamp needs to be tightened. Once it’s secure, it’s installed!

3. Recycle the Old Battery

A vehicle battery must be recycled appropriately, so take it to an auto repair or parts store that will recycle your battery for you. They may take it for free or may require a small fee. If you’re putting the battery inside your car to transport it, wrap it up in an old towel to avoid any grease getting on your interior.
