Eye specialists recommend most people have a complete eye exam at least once each year. However, if you are over age 50, your vision may change more rapidly, and you may need to schedule a checkup more often to ensure your eyeglasses or contact lenses enable you to see as clearly as possible. Other eye conditions may show up in later years, also, although most can appear at any age.

5 Reasons to Schedule Your Next Eye Exam

1. Squinting

If you find you are squinting to read a document or book, or if you hold it farther away, your vision has probably changed. The same is true if you suddenly find you must increase the text size on your computer or hunch closer to the screen to read.

2. Blurry Vision or Headaches

Signs of eye strain, especially after prolonged computer use, include blurry vision, headaches, or sore eyes. If this is happening to you, schedule an eye exam; you may need a new eyeglass or contact lens prescription.

3. Spots, Light Flashes, or Floaters

eye examSpots or floaters in your vision are caused by specks of vitreous gel that break loose and float in the back of the eye. While it’s usually not cause for alarm, you should schedule an eye exam to rule out certain medical conditions, especially if you also experience flashes of light. If the floaters are particularly bothersome, your eye care specialist may be able to recommend treatment.

4. Trouble Driving at Night

If you notice you are having more difficulty driving at night or reading street signs when it’s dark, schedule an exam to determine what may be causing the issues. Problems with night vision can sometimes be managed with special lenses.

5. Diabetes or Other Health Conditions

If you have a health condition, like diabetes, that can affect your eyes, you should probably have your eyes checked more often than once a year, especially after age 50, to make sure no significant changes have occurred. You should also schedule more frequent checkups if you have a family history of glaucoma.
