Buying a new ATV or snowmobile is exciting. You may be ready to load it up on your trailer and head to some local trails as soon as possible. Before you start the engine, make sure you’re legally ready to ride. Below, All Seasons Honda & Peninsula Ski-Doo in Homer, AK, shares a guide to what to do after buying a snowmobile or ATV.

Do These 3 Tasks After Buying an ATV

1. Register With the DMV

While they’re not your typical cars or trucks, snowmobiles and ATVs must be registered with the Department of Motor Vehicles. Bring your bill of sale, a purchase order from the dealer, or a copy of the warranty card along with the title and registration form. If you buy a snowmobile or ATV from a dealership, they may take care of the registration on-site.

2. Purchase Decals

atv-homer-akSnowmobiles require two decals. One is the permanent registration and contains a specific decal number associated with your ride. The other is a tab for the season, similar to the yearly registration tab on a car. These both must be visible while riders are mounted on the snowmobile.

3. Get Insurance

In some states, it is mandatory to have snowmobile and ATV insurance. These policies protect the rider in case of injuries and crashes. They will also help pay for a damaged sled or ATV in the event of an accident or mechanical failure. Look into insurance before you drive, as you may want to sign up ahead of time.

Make sure your ATV or snowmobile has proper registration, decals, and insurance if it’s necessary for your state before you head out for the first ride.
