In early December, Michael Cervates (Flatwork Division) approached the Lincoln office to organize a toy drive for the People’s City Mission. The people’s city mission was established in 1907 to help those in need get back on track.  They have helped over 1 Million men, women, and children suffering from homelessness and poverty, mental illness, abuse, and many other life struggles. In addition, the Omaha office jumped aboard and hosted a toy drive for the Open Door Mission.  Open Door Mission is a Gospel Rescue Mission founded in 1954 committed to breaking the cycle of homelessness and poverty. Each day, Open Door Mission’s campus offers 816 safe, shelter beds to homeless men, women, and children.

Michael’s idea for the company to host these drives was inspiring.  Looking past our own needs to give to those truly in need is “food for the soul”.  As a leader in the industry, we should look to do more for the community.  Many companies fail to get involved and as a result, fail to make any kind of positive difference.

When Mr. Cervantes heard that both locations were going to host a toy drive he said, “I have goosebumps and it makes me feel good to do something for the community.  It is nice to see Stephens & Smith a part of this wonderful time of sharing and hope it will continue for years to come.”

Thank you to everyone who donated to the drive.  It was truly a humbling experience. Volunteering your time and resources to those in need will cause you to look at the world from a different perspective.  Giving to others is much more rewarding than receiving.  Just remember, people you surround yourself by are paying attention to what you do.  Volunteering reflects and supports a complete picture of you, and gives real examples of your commitment.  Show people what you are passionate about and maybe you will inspire them too.
