Dog boarding is often stressful for pet parents and their four-legged children. Having a checklist of things to pack in their boarding bag can make you feel less frazzled and will ensure your pup has everything they’ll need in the kennel. Here are seven items you should always include.

What to Pack in the Dog Boarding Bag

1. Food, Plus a Little Extra

Some kennels provide pet food (although they usually charge extra for it!), but it’s better to bring along your dog’s regular food so they don’t get an upset stomach. You can pack it in a plastic container or divide it into zip-top bags. Just make sure there’s enough for their entire stay, plus a little extra—just in case!

2. Any Medications

If your furry friend takes medication, pack it along with detailed instructions about when to give it and how. If there are any medications they only take occasionally for skin irritation or something similar, include those as well so the kennel is prepared for anything.

3. Paperwork & ID as Required by the Kennel

Dogs boarding for the first time will need proof of vaccinations. After that, the kennel typically keeps those on file for future stays. It’s also important to ensure your pup has proper identification. That means they’re wearing a collar with tags that have their own name, plus your name and phone number.

4. Leashes

5. Fido’s Favorite Toys & Treats

Most kennels provide plenty of toys to keep the dogs active and entertained, but sending Fido with one or two of their favorites is a good idea. This will make them feel more comfortable in the unfamiliar environment. Send along their favorite treats, too, with instructions on when to give them.

6. Emergency Contact Information

In addition to providing the kennel with your contact information, you may also want to provide the name and phone number of a family member or friend in case of an emergency. This is especially important if you’ll be out of town without a quick way to get back home. If you won’t have cell service, try to provide the number to your hotel as an alternative.

7. Reminder of You

Kennels are a scary place for dogs, especially when it’s their first time. Sending them with a blanket, old T-shirt, or even a sock of yours will help them feel safe and comfortable. Having that reminder will reassure your pup you’ll be back to get them soon.
