When you have a stink bug problem the best way to tackle the issue is prevention. Keeping these pests out completely can make the difference in controlling any infestation. While exterminators can help control current stink bug problems and set up a prevention plan to keep them away for good, here are a few ways you can add extra preventive measures to keep things under control.

How to Prevent a Stink Bug Problem

1. Seal Up Entry Points

Seal any openings, and replace or fix any damaged screens, windows, or doors, as well as weatherstripping. Applying an insect spray once holes are sealed will also help.

2. Reduce Moisture

Eliminate moisture in and around your property. Many pests, including stink bugs, love a water source and will flock to moisture near pipes and drains. Make sure there are no leaks or clogs. Check roofing and gutters, as well, to reduce standing water around your landscaping and foundation.

3. Eliminate Food Sources

Stink bugs are searching for winter sustenance. Keep food in airtight containers and remove garbage frequently. Place any trash in containers with tight lids. Always keep floors and counters free of spills, crumbs, and other food particles.

4. Don’t Squish

The odor that gives these pests their name comes from squishing them. While our first instinct is to crush insects when we see them, try to avoid the impulse with stink bugs. Squishing them releases the odor from their pores on the sides of their bodies, making their presence in your home worse.

5. Vacuum

If you already have a stink bug problem inside your home, your best bet is to grab the vacuum and remove them that way. Throw away the vacuum bag as soon as you can. For bagless vacuums, dump and clean out as soon as possible, so their residue doesn’t permeate your home and vacuum.
