Part of enjoying your outdoor water features in the spring, summer, and fall lies in how well they’re maintained in the winter months. While pond maintenance may be the last thing on your mind when the temperatures drop, there are a few simple steps you can take to keep your ponds, waterfalls, and fountains in optimal condition throughout winter. Here, the pond pros from Specialty Water Gardens & Landscapes in Columbia, MO, share some helpful advice.

5 Tips for Wintertime Water Feature Maintenance

1. Turn Off Bottom Aerators

If you have an ecosystem-style pond with aerators located at the bottom, shut these features off when the temperature drops. This will enable your aquatic life to find warmth in the deep, warmer waters near the bottom of your pond throughout the winter.

2. Keep Shallow Aerators Running

You may also want to keep your shallow aerators or deicers running to prevent your pond from freezing over completely. It’s also a good idea to consider shutting off your waterfall or fountain features, especially if your supply line will be exposed to freezing temperatures.

3. Add Water as Needed

Pond owners know to add water in the summertime; but, often, they overlook the effects of evaporation during the winter months. Your water levels can still lower in cold weather, so keep an eye on them and add more water as it’s needed.

4. Consider Your Fountain Type

If you have a standalone fountain made of porcelain or concrete, beware of cracking. As water inside the basin freezes, it water featurewill expand and permanently damage your structure. If the water keeps moving, however, you shouldn’t experience any issues.

5. Look Out for Ice Dams

Ice dams can develop and force water to extend past the liner’s edge, which could result in damage to your water feature. If you’re going to be away for a few days and can’t check for dam development, ask someone to take care of your system in your absence.
