When you experience any issues with your eyes, it’s difficult to focus on anything else. Even when symptoms seem minor, like dryness or itchiness, it’s best to get an eye exam right away, rather than wait for the condition to resolve itself. These organs are just as vulnerable to injury, bacteria, and viruses which can result in various issues and diseases. Below are some common problems people experience and why it’s helpful to have them checked out immediately.

Issues Worth Coming in for an Eye Exam

1. Chronic Dry Eye

Chronic dry eye is a condition in which the eyes do not produce enough tears, or they are not sufficiently hydrating. Characterized by redness, itchiness, burning, light sensitivity, and stringy mucus, the condition can range from mildly uncomfortable to quite painful. It can be caused by smoking, dehydration, contact lenses, or long periods spent before a computer screen. An eye exam allows your optometrist to conclusively determine the cause of your symptoms and develop an appropriate course of treatment.

2. Conjunctivitis

eye examConjunctivitis is an inflammation of the lining of the eye. Typically caused by exposure to a virus or bacteria, this condition is marked by redness, itchiness, pain, and mucus. Symptoms can last 7-10 days, and will typically clear up on their own. However, depending on the extent of the infection, your eye doctor may prescribe antibiotic drops as well.

3. Blepharitis

Blepharitis is caused by exposure to germs and bacteria. This can result from sleeping on a dirty pillowcase, leaving your makeup on when going to bed, or touching your eyes with unclean hands. Symptoms include redness, itchiness, or the sensation that there is something in your eye. Since they are so similar to those of conjunctivitis, it is important to have your optometrist determine the affliction and appropriate treatment.

4. Sties

Sties are small, tender bumps which occur on the edge of the eyelid. Though rarely dangerous, they are uncomfortable and can become enlarged or infected. The condition is typically caused by bacteria and can disappear on its own if the area is kept clean. However, a topical treatment may be prescribed in more serious cases.
