October through March is cold and flu season in the U.S. During this time of year, people are most likely to become sick and spread these illnesses to others. While virtually anyone is vulnerable to contracting the cold or flu, small children are at the greatest risk. The immune systems of children under five are not yet fully developed, which makes them more susceptible to germs, bacteria, and viruses. Although you cannot protect your child from every illness, there are a number of steps you can take to lower their risk. 1. Feed Children a Healthy, Varied Diet

Proper nutrition is one of the easiest ways to boost your child’s immune system. Children who consume plenty of fruits, vegetables, protein, and whole grains have the vitamins and nutrients they need to stay strong and healthy. If you have a picky eater, speak to their doctor about vitamins and supplements that will fill these nutritional gaps.

2. Emphasize the Importance of Hand Washing

Proper hand washing is a simple and effective way to stop the spread of germs. Teach your child how to properly wash their hands using soap and warm water. Ideally, they should scrub for at least 20 seconds. You can make sure they do so by having them sing a song such as “Happy Birthday” or “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.”

3. Keep Your Child Home When Sick

If your son or daughter attends a day care center or child care program, have them stay home while they are sick, especially if they have a fever. At this age, missing one or two days will not drastically impact their academic progress, and allowing them to be in school will slow their recovery time. Additionally, your little one may be highly contagious and put other children at risk.

4. Consider the Flu Vaccine

Speak to your child’s physician regarding flu vaccines. While not recommended for all children, this vaccine protects against many strains of the flu. The effects of this shot can last for over a year, boosting your little one’s immune system and resilience.

5. Dress Them Appropriately

Cold weather can weaken a child’s immune system, so it’s crucial to make sure they are dressed appropriately. In addition to a warm winter coat, children should also wear hats, gloves, and scarves. If temperatures dip below freezing, add other layers such as thermal pants and extra sweaters.
