The cost of a new furnace depends on a few different factors, including your location and your furnace’s energy source. Broadly speaking, there are essential details that homeowners should know when they’re deciding on a new heating unit.

What Determines the Cost of a New Furnace?

1. Size

furnaceLarger furnaces are more expensive, but size doesn’t necessarily determine how efficiently a furnace will heat your home. To determine the right equipment for your home, an HVAC contractor will use the Manual J method to help you select the right furnace size. The Manual J method takes into account your home’s layout, square footage, climate, and construction materials, among other factors.

2. Energy Source

In general, electric furnaces are the least expensive, oil furnaces are the most expensive, and gas furnaces fall somewhere in the middle. However, energy prices vary widely depending on individualized factors like your area’s cost of living, warranties included with your purchase, and even your unit’s brand. Including installation, a standard-efficiency electric furnace costs approximately $3,925. A standard gas model costs around $4,500, and a standard oil furnace costs $4,885.

3. Efficiency

Although high-efficiency furnaces tend to cost more upfront, they will consume less energy over time, making them more environmentally friendly (and cost-effective) than their standard counterparts. As you consider different furnaces, you might have to encounter a few different acronyms; look for a high average fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) rating if you’re primarily interested in efficiency.

As you shop around for a new furnace, let a local HVAC contractor be your guide. They can help you find any available manufacturer rebates, incentives, and specials to help find the best unit that meets your needs and budget.
