Early Math Exposure Leads to Success -Hasbrouck Heights, Wallington, Lodi, NJ
A study conducted in the early 1970’s followed a sampleof students who were exceptional in math, over the course of 40 years. Whenrecently surveyed to track the accomplishments of these students, researchersfound that in both men and women, early mathematic success tended to contributeto the creative skills and leadership ability in their occupations.
Between 25-40% of these students went on to earndoctorates, which compared to the 2% US average, is significant. A quarter ofthese students went on to write a combined 7.5 thousand academic articles. Andthough it may seem to many that being talented in math was an ability that oneis born with, this study refutes that. While genetics does play a small role in how ablepeople are to understand mathematic concepts, a far more important factor ishow early students are exposed to mathematic concepts. It has been shown thatstudents who exercise their math ability early on, were the ones who tended toexcel in it later on.
