Early Math Exposure Leads to Success- Glen Rock, Fair Lawn, & Ridgewood, NJ
A study conducted in the early 1970’s followed a sample of students who were exceptional in math, over the course of 40 years. When recently surveyed to track the accomplishments of these students, researchers found that in both men and women, early mathematic success tended to contribute to the creative skills and leadership ability in their occupations.
Between 25-40% of these students went on to earn doctorates, which compared to the 2% US average, is significant. A quarter of these students went on to write a combined 7.5 thousand academic articles. And though it may seem to many that being talented in math was an ability that one is born with, this study refutes that. While genetics does play a small role in how able people are to understand mathematic concepts, a far more important factor is how early students are exposed to mathematic concepts. It has been shown that students who exercise their math ability early on, were the ones who tended to excel in it later on.
