Even if you brush, floss, and rinse on a daily basis, professional dental cleanings are still a must. But despite the importance of these appointments, many patients are still unsure what transpires while they’re in the dental chair. Below is what you should expect after scheduling your visit.

6 Steps of a Dental Cleaning

1. Initial Inspection

To start, your dental hygienist will inspect your teeth and gums for signs of cavities and gum disease and note any problem areas. They will also ask whether you have any concerns or questions regarding your oral health or upcoming cleaning.

2. X-Rays

If it’s been a while since your last visit, the dentist may recommend digital X-rays of your mouth. This will allow them to thoroughly assess the condition of your teeth and gums while inspecting for more serious oral health issues, including tooth decay, bone loss, tumors, and oral abnormalities.

3. Tartar & Plaque Removal

Using a small dental instrument known as a scaler, your hygienist will remove plaque and tartar buildup from between your teeth and below the gum line. This process helps combat tooth decay and gum disease in a way that regular brushing and flossing cannot.

4. Polishing

5. Deep Flossing

A professional flossing will remove any lingering plaque while allowing your hygienist to dive deep between your teeth to inspect for potential gum issues. Your hygienist may also provide you with tricks and tips to improve your flossing technique and gum health.

6. Final Inspection

After your cleaning, the hygienist will have your dentist perform a final inspection to assess issues such as gum disease, teeth grinding, and misalignment. Your dentist will also examine your X-rays and check for signs of oral cancer. Depending on the results of your checkup, your dentist may recommend you return for additional dental work.
