4 Winter Eye Care Tips to Protect Against Dry Eyes, Cold Spring, Kentucky

Winter is finally here, and with it comes the arrival of cold, harsh weather. In addition to frigid temperatures, bitter winds, and abrasive snows, this season is marked by dry air and low humidity. This dry air can have an impact on your hair, skin, and — most importantly — your eyes. Dry eyes can be itchy and uncomfortable, making it difficult to see and complete everyday tasks. If the winter air has left your eyes dry or irritated, there are a number of steps you can take to alleviate your discomfort.

For winter eye care tips, continue reading below.

4 Winter Eye Care Tips for Preventing Dryness

Wear Protective Eyewear

If you ski, snowboard, or participate in any other winter sport, invest in goggles or wrap-around sunglasses. In addition to keeping snow and wind from directly hitting your eyes, protective eye gear helps to lock in your eyes’ natural moisture. Not a winter sport enthusiast? You can still reap the benefits of this protection by wearing sunglasses while outdoors during the day.

Purchase a Humidifier

eye careIndoor air is notoriously dry, and the use of heaters and HVAC systems in the winter can make it worse. This dry air can zap the natural moisture from your eyes, skin, and hair. While you may still need your heater to keep the temperature in your home or office comfortable, you should invest in a humidifier. This tool helps to restore moisture to the room, preventing your eyes from over-drying.

Use Eye Drops

If your eyes continue to feel dry, even with the use of glasses and a humidifier, consider purchasing artificial tears or lubricating eye drops. There are a number of different eye drops available in pharmacies, drug stores, and other eye care centers. While these over-the-counter options are not prescription strength, they can help substantially improve your symptoms. Consult with your Optometrist about the right drops for you.

Visit Your Eye Doctor

Dry, winter air can cause certain individuals to develop chronic dry eye. Although not life-threatening, this condition can be extremely uncomfortable. If you believe you are afflicted by chronic dry eye, make an appointment to visit your eye doctor. They will be able to conclusively determine if the weather is the source of your discomfort and develop an ideal course of treatment for you.
