Winter may be full of fun and festivities, but it also presents a host of potential hazards like severe storms, freezing temperatures, and contagious illnesses. This year, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) issued a list of tips to help protect children from these harsh weather conditions. Along with taking them to a qualified pediatrician, there are several steps you can take to keep little ones safe.

Winter Wellness Beyond the Pediatrician

1. Dress Babies Warm

Infants and young children need to be bundled up in several layers during the winter months. To keep them warm and dry, you should also dress them in boots, mittens, and hats. Ensure the boots have enough extra space to accommodate at least two pairs of socks.

2. Watch for Hypothermia

pediatricianDressing your child appropriately will help prevent the risk of hypothermia in cold weather conditions. However, children are particularly susceptible to hypothermia, which often occurs when a child plays in cold temperatures in improper clothing, or when the clothes become wet. If you notice your child shivering and becoming clumsy and lethargic, call 911 right away. Go inside, remove wet clothing, and wrap your child in warm blankets until help arrives.

3. Prevent & Treat Frostbite

Frostbite occurs when the skin begins to freeze. Extremities like the ears, toes, fingers, and nose are particularly susceptible. Dressing in layers and covering all body parts can help prevent this condition. Never let your child play in temperatures below -15 degrees Fahrenheit, as any exposed skin will begin to freeze in just a few minutes. If frostbite occurs, go inside immediately and soak the affected areas in warm—not hot—water of about 104 degrees Fahrenheit, which is the temperature of a standard hot tub. You may apply a warm washcloth, but avoid rubbing. Ask your pediatrician for dosing instructions to give little ones ibuprofen.

Enjoy a safe, healthy, and happy winter season when you practice necessary precautions for your child.
