When it comes to comfort, cleanliness, and civility, port-a-potties are essential to any construction site, private party, or public venue. Due to the details involved in renting portable restrooms, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has formulated a list of guidelines with which all employers must comply. Before securing a port-a-potty rental, protect those who will use them by following OSHA’s safety regulations.

5 Rules Regarding Port-a-Potties

1. Accessibility

Sanitation facilities must be easily accessible for all users of a port-a-potty. According to the United States Department of Labor, this mandates that a company must offer enough facilities so extensive lines do not accumulate. Generally, an employer should provide one portable restroom per 10 employees. Additionally, laborers are allowed to leave their workspace to use a port-a-potty as often and as long as is reasonable.

2. Gender Designations

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration also requires employers go provide designated port-a-potties for members of each sex. However, if a unit only contains one toilet, a business does not have to provide separate facilities to accommodate each gender.

3. Privacy

Should a port-a-potty contain more than one toilet, OSHA dictates that each toilet must be enclosed by a door. Additionally, the walls surrounding the toilet must reach a height that provides sufficient seclusion.

4. Sanitation

To prevent disease and promote sanitation, all port-a-potties must be regularly cleaned. OSHA regulations mandate that all port-a-potty cleanings adhere to a consistent sanitation schedule. During these scheduled cleanings, each unit must be stocked with toilet paper, paper towels, and antiseptic soap.

5. ADA Compliance

Last of all, because the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) demands that persons with disabilities be provided equal access to goods and services, it is important that employers rent ADA-compliant port-a-potties. With waste receptacles, soap dispensers, and other sanitation accessories installed at adequate heights, these enlarged units allow persons with special needs to tend to matters of personal care.
