3 Common Koi Pond Myths, Koolaupoko, Hawaii

The Chinese believe koi ponds bring good luck and have used the water features as part of feng shui plans for centuries. Known as playful and social fish, koi are a colorful carp that make ideal backyard water feature tenants because of their beauty and hardiness. They even enjoy being hand-fed. If you are considering this addition to your yard, here are some of the most common misconceptions surrounding koi ponds.

3 Koi Pond Misconceptions

1. They Attract Mosquitoes

Like any proper backyard water feature, koi ponds feature running water and do not attract mosquitoes. Stagnant water is what attracts the insects, as they use it as a breeding ground. As long as your koi pond features running water, you will not have mosquitoes, only healthy fish.

2. They Are Far Too Much Maintenance

water featuresAny water feature requires a degree of maintenance to keep the water clear and the inhabitants healthy. Koi ponds benefit from semi-annual deep cleanings in the spring and fall, and do best with the right ecosystem elements, including rocks and gravel, aquatic plants, a biological filter, and plenty of fish friends. A skimmer is also necessary to create this backyard water feature; however, as long as you have all of these elements working together, you will not need to spend lots of time on your pond.

3. Koi Grow Based On the Size of Their Environment

Koi typically grow between 18” and 26” as per their genetics. They will grow slightly slower if they are in crowded ponds, but the idea that their environment alone dictates their size is false. If you want your fish to grow at a faster rate, simply change their water more often. Koi give off more growth hormones when they are living in crowded environments, so frequent water changes is the best way to promote large, beautiful fish.
