A Dentist’s Guide to a Successful First Appointment

1. Practice at Home

Because kids become fearful of the dentist and the tools that will be used, practice dental care at home. Get them in the habit of brushing each night before bed, as well as using a tiny bit of mouthwash. If they’re willing, you can even play dentist appointment with them. Lay back in a chair, and let them look at your smile with a mirror to show them what will happen.

2. Communicate About Oral Health

family dentistIt’s beneficial when parents talk about oral health and why it's so important to brush, floss, and use mouthwash on a daily basis. You can describe how plaque can come from foods and drinks and why it needs to be cleaned away. And, go over why you visit the dentist twice a year for extra cleanings. There are many children's books out there with pictures of oral health appointments as well.

3. Always Use Positive Language

Words are extremely powerful. Always have good things to say when talking about teeth or the dentist around the house—even if a root canal or filling was uncomfortable. Prepare your kids by having them associate the dentist with a positive experience.

4. Bring Something Comforting With Them

While you’ll be there, having a stuffed animal or blanket can make a world of a difference in your child’s comfort level in the chair. The dentist and staff can even ask about the item to start a conversation and help your little one get to know the team a bit.
