It is widely acknowledged water is one of the most destructive forces on earth. Because of this, modern buildings and infrastructure are engineered to repel and redirect it with solutions like waterproofing and drainage systems. But when they stop working right, the resulting problems could have a devastating impact on your home.

To help you respond as quickly as possible to potential drainage issues, here are a few easy-to-spot signs to watch out for.

5 Indicators of Drainage Problems

1. Frequent Puddles

If water tends to pool up near your home, your downspouts may require extensions so they can drain water further away. Respond to such a situation immediately, as allowing standing water to accumulate near your home will destroy your foundation.

2. Gutter Rust

When your gutters start rusting, plan to replace them soon. Continual rusting will eventually lead to cracks and pinholes, which will allow water to drip through.

3. Clogging

drainageGutters often clog, usually with leaves and twigs. The result is an overflow, which could negatively impact your foundation. To stay on top of clogs, always clean your gutters at least twice a year. Do so more often if your home is surrounded by lots of foliage.

4. Basement Water Stains

One seemingly unlikely place to check for gutter problems is your basement. If they have been leaking, water may seep in and leave stains on the basement walls or ceiling. Leaks may also cause spalling or mineral deposits, which will have a flaky appearance.

5. Mildew Growth

If you smell mildew in your home, especially in the attic or basement, it could indicate gutter leaks. If these aren’t the cause, however, it may also be because of improper bathroom venting.
