When given proper care and a loving home, dogs can provide many years of loyalty and companionship. Although the average life span of a pup is far shorter than that of a human, there are a number of steps you can take to preserve their happiness and health. An appropriate diet, sufficient exercise, and a regular vaccination schedule will all improve your dog’s quality of life. Below is a list of puppy shots your pet needs during their first year.

First-Year Puppy Shots & Vaccines

1. DHPP

Of all the puppy shots and vaccinations your dog needs, DHPP is perhaps the most important. As a combination vaccine, it protects against canine distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza, and parvovirus. These illness are highly contagious and can range from mild to life-threatening. DHPP is given at the 7-, 10-, 13-, and 16-week marks, then again at the one-year mark. A yearly booster is administered thereafter.

2. Bordetella

puppy shotsBordetella is a communicable bacterium which can cause coughing, whooping, vomiting, seizures, and even death. This is the primary cause of kennel cough and difficult to treat once contracted. Although it is not a necessary pet vaccine, your vet may recommend this shot at 7, 16 weeks, and one year of age, as well as a yearly booster.

3. Rabies

The rabies vaccine is especially important for pups who spend time outdoors with other dogs and animals. Rabies is a highly contagious disease that can affect humans as well as dogs, resulting in delirium and even death. Rabies vaccines are given around 16 weeks and one year. A booster should be administered every one to three years, or as prescribed by your state’s laws.
