Getting dental implants involves two separate sessions. During the first, the implant is placed in the jawbone by an oral surgeon. After the healing process is complete, they will use the implant as an anchor for a crown or dentures. Here, Oral Surgery Associates of Alaska in Anchorage explains what you can expect during and after the surgery.

What Happens During the Surgery?

This type of oral surgery can be done under local anesthesia or IV sedation. During the procedure, your oral surgeon will make an incision in your gums to expose the bone underneath. They will then drill a hole into your jawbone and insert the titanium implant. The gums are placed over the implant and stitched up. Now the healing phase begins; this can take three to six months.

When the bone has healed around the dental implant, your dentist will begin the restoration of your tooth. Your new implant will provide solid support for a crown, bridge, or dentures, which will be attached to the implant via an abutment. This must be attached to the implant during the initial surgery or at a later time.

What Can You Expect?

dental implantsYour gums and face may feel a little bruised and swollen after the procedure. You may also feel some pain at the implant site and experience minor bleeding. Your oral surgeon will prescribe antibiotics and pain medication as needed. For the first few days afterwards, stick to eating soft foods. You must also be gentle around the surgical site when you’re brushing your teeth.
