How many calories was in that cupcake? If you have no idea, you are not alone. Americans are not the best at assigning the correct calories to foods consumed in their day. In fact a survey of diners published in the American Journal of Public Health found that they underestimated the calorie content of commonly found foods on restaurant menus by an average of 600 calories.  From fried goods to salad options, they were underestimated greatly.

Another study done by Harvard Medical School found similar results with more than ¼ of the people polled from various age groups underestimated the calorie content at fast food chains by at least 500 calories. Wow! Truly shocking to not have a clue about what we are consuming.

In recent years, some new regulations have made nutrition information more available to consumers, but is it effective?  Too early to tell, but if you are dieting and are looking to stay within a certain calorie range for your meals, I believe it to be very helpful.  It helps learn the art of balance and how that relates to what the scale shows.

It all starts with awareness. Be aware, be assertive….. it’s your health!!  Knowledge is power and by knowing what we consume, we can learn to make healthier food choices a habit.
