Winter is just around the corner. For many drivers, that also means the challenges of winter car ownership are just around the corner, too, like salted streets, icy roads, freezing temperatures and heavy snow. Check out these tips to help keep you and your car in the best shape possible for the winter to come!

Maintain a Healthy Battery

Maintain a healthy auto battery to make sure you don't end up having to jump start your car in below-freezing temperatures. This is an ideal time of year to make sure your battery’s posts and connections are corrosion-free and that your battery has all the water it needs. If your battery is more than three years old, have a certified auto repair shop test its ability to hold a charge.

Check Tire Tread

Spinning out in the snow and ending up in a ditch isn't the best way to discover your tires are worn out. Winter tires are a must in areas where the temperature regularly drops below 45 degrees. So if you've been waiting to pick up a new set of tires, don’t delay as your safety depends on tire traction and winter-grade tires tend to be in short supply when the snow begins to fall.

Check The Oil

Cold weather can beat up your engine. Motor oil thickens when cold, making it harder for the engine to turn over. Check your owner’s manual for guidance about which oil to use in different climates and temperatures. Whenever you have the oil changed, replace the oil filter as well to ensure the system has the maximum amount of flow.

Replace Wiper Blades

You have to replace wiper blades more often than you might think. They usually work effectively for about one year, so be sure to invest in some new ones if you’re due. Here’s another important step to take before you find yourself struggling to see in a blinding storm: Fill up your windshield washer reservoir with windshield washer fluid and check to see that your heater and defroster are working properly so you can keep the windshield nice and clean.

Lighting

One major hazard with winter driving is that the sun sets earlier in the day, which means there's less daylight, especially on your commute home. As a result, you'll want to do everything you possibly can to make sure all of your vehicle's lights are in excellent shape, providing the brightest possible illumination they can.
