Building demolition is a complex project performed by civil engineers and experienced commercial contractors. An important component of the process is choosing the correct technique for the size, construction, and materials of the building or buildings in question. Read on to learn about three of the most common methods used in building demolition projects.

3 Techniques Used in Building Demolition

Wrecking Ball

This is the oldest and most common method of demolishing a building. Also called the “crane-and-ball” method, it involves the swinging of a heavy sphere—often weighing almost 15,000 pounds—from a tall crane to smash the structure. While effective, there are some drawbacks to this technique. For instance, if metal rebar is within the building, extra removal attempts will be required, since the ball and crane can’t smash rebar. A wrecking ball also can’t be used in the demolition of taller structures.

Strip-Out

DemolitionThis method is becoming increasingly popular as awareness of recycling and the reuse of construction materials grows. A strip-out involves extensive salvage prior to demolition until most of the building can be taken away without any other type of destruction. This method is particularly safe and environmentally friendly, but not every building contains a significant amount of recyclable materials.

High-Reach Arm

In this traditional method of demolition, construction companies use a large, heavy machine equipped with a demolition arm to shear, crush, or hammer the building. The high-reach arm method can be used for much taller buildings than the wrecking ball, and on almost any type of construction.
