The holiday season can be a tough time for those who have recently suffered the loss of a loved one. During the holidays, we traditionally spend time with our families; when a family member is no longer present, the season can become difficult and isolating for the bereaved. There is no shortcut through the grief after funeral services, but there are ways to make the holidays a little bit easier to handle. Here are four ways to make it through the coming season after a loss.

How to Get Through the Holidays After the Loss of a Loved One

Prioritize Self-Care

The process of losing a loved one takes an emotional and physical toll that can take many months to begin to recover from. Exhaustion can make you more vulnerable to illness and fatigue, so get plenty of sleep and nourish yourself properly. The holidays are prime time to indulge in sweets and alcohol, but limiting these can lead to improved health.

Accept Help From Others

Grief can make us feel that we are burdening others with our sadness, but remember that offers of help are well-intentioned and good for both the recipient and the giver. When someone offers to make you a meal, give you a ride, or shovel the sidewalk, accept their help.

Funeral ServicesAttend One Event

After the funeral services are over, bereavement can feel isolating. Perhaps being alone is more comfortable, or the idea of socializing seems like an unbearable effort. Try to say “yes” to just one event during the holiday season, whether it’s a holiday party, a caroling group, or a religious service. Making an appearance can ease pain and make the holidays feel more cheerful.

Mark the Passing

The holiday season is often a purely happy time, but don’t try to ignore your loss. Mark your loved one’s passing with their favorite holiday tradition, a memorial candle, or other token of remembrance.
