When the fire protection system in your building sounds, the first thing you should do is leave the premises and call 911. While an actual fire might be the most probable cause for the loud blaring, this is not always the case. It is also not the only sound your device might make. Below are some common noises you can expect a fire alarm system to produce and what you should do if you hear them.

3 Noises Your Fire Protection System Might Make

1. Occasional Chirping or Beeping

Typically, fire alarm systems are programmed to make a beeping or chirping noise if the battery level is low. However, this could also be caused by dust or debris buildup obstructing the battery from delivering power to the device. A lack of power could also occur if the battery pull-tab has yet to be removed. If cleaning, removing the tab, and replacing the batteries does not work, it could be time to replace the system.

2. Consistent Chirping or Beeping

However, if the chirping is accompanied by a flashing red LED light, the fire protection system as a whole could be malfunctioning. If you have a wireless system, it might also be experiencing interference from a similar system nearby.

3. Loud, Pulsating Alarm

The sound most people expect a fire alarm to make can start anytime the smoke alarm detects combustible products in the air. Although fire and smoke are not always the culprits, you should still exit the building until it has been inspected. Then, you can determine what may have caused the false alarm—whether it was a loose or improperly installed battery or humidity near one of the devices.
