Just like any businessperson, a musician needs to come to a job prepared for whatever may happen. Nobody wants to be the band member who interrupts the set for a broken string or unplugged cable. A good rule of thumb is to bring two of everything, including an extra instrument, if you have one. Below are five more tips to remember when staging your next gig.

5 Items You Need When Staging a Gig

1. Emergency Tool Kit

stagingSometimes, an emergency repair or adjustment is essential, so it’s smart to keep some tools with you just in case. Your kit should include pliers, a screwdriver, allen keys, and spare batteries for your gear. Also, include electrical tape to lay down your cables, tape your set list where you can see it, or for other emergency uses.

2. Extra Musical Accessories

As every musician knows, strings break, and items get lost, forgotten, or refuse to work at inconvenient times. Depending on your instrument, always pack an extra set of guitar strings, picks, drumsticks, or tubes. If you’re a guitarist, it never hurts to include an extra capo and guitar strap.

3. Additional Cables

Packing two sets of the cables you need will ensure you are well supplied in the event of a malfunction. Don’t forget to include an extension cord or power strip with a six-foot cable in case there aren’t enough power outlets to stage your performance.

4. Flashlight

If you play a night gig, even at an indoor venue, a flashlight can be a lifesaver when trying to set up in poorly lit areas. If your cell phone has a built-in flashlight, that works, too—but don’t forget to bring your phone charger.

5. Non-Musical Incidentals

A few small items to pack with your gear include a marker or pen to make notes or changes to a set list, and a small supply of business cards to generate future opportunities. Don’t rely on your debit card for minor expenses—some venues have paid parking and only accept cash.
